Hospital Bags for Labour and Birth - Be Ready for the Big Day
A dedicated hospital bag keeps everything in one place so you can grab it and go when the time comes. Most midwives recommend having your hospital bag packed and ready by 36 weeks. Our hospital bags are roomy, practical and stylish - with space for your clothes, toiletries, baby essentials and important documents, without looking like you are lugging a suitcase.
What to Look for in a Hospital Bag
- Spacious main compartment - fits several outfits, sleepwear, nursing bras and baby clothes
- Organised internal pockets - separate sections for toiletries, snacks, charger and documents
- Easy to carry - comfortable handles plus a shoulder or crossbody strap for the walk from car to ward
- Durable, wipe-clean materials - holds up to travel and repeated use in the weeks after birth
- Doubles as a travel bag - many of our hospital bags transition into a weekend bag, gym bag or larger nappy bag after you come home
Many parents pack a separate bag for themselves and a nappy bag for baby's items - this makes it simple to grab just the nappy bag for outings once you are home. Browse our maternity bags for additional options, or explore the Trellis range for a nappy bag designed to carry you from hospital day one through the toddler years.
Hospital Bags – Frequently Asked Questions
For mum: comfortable loungewear, a light robe, slippers, nursing bras (x2-3), maternity underwear, toiletries, lip balm, hair ties, phone charger, snacks and any birth plan or documents your hospital requires.
For baby: newborn and 0000 onesies (x3-4), a going-home outfit, newborn nappies, wipes, a swaddle or muslin wrap and a portable change mat for the trip home.

Most midwives recommend having your hospital bag packed and ready by 36 weeks. If you have had a complicated pregnancy or are expecting multiples, aim for 34 weeks. Keep the bag near your front door or in the car so it is easy to grab in a hurry.
A medium-to-large overnight or weekender style is sufficient for most stays. If you are expecting a longer stay, twins or planning a caesarean with a 3-4 night stay, a larger bag or a second smaller bag for baby items is helpful.
It is easier to have both. Use a hospital bag for your own things and a dedicated nappy bag for baby's outfits, nappies and blankets. Once you are home the nappy bag is already packed and ready for every outing.
Yes. Many of our hospital bags are designed to double as a travel bag, gym bag or larger nappy bag once you leave the hospital. Choose a style with clean lines and quality materials for the best long-term use.
